What the aircraft finds

  • Hardware: cracked insulators, damaged crossarms, corroded connections, missing cotter pins, seen at the conductor rather than from the road.
  • Thermal: hot connections and failing components on substation equipment that look normal in daylight.
  • Vegetation: encroachment along the right-of-way, documented with location for the trim crew.
  • Storm damage: the break located before the truck rolls.

What it costs to hire

Reported drone line-inspection rates run about $200 to $300 per mile in 2026, and utilities report doing it without taking lines out of service. Flathead Electric Cooperative in Montana hired a certified contractor in 2026 to assess its territory for exactly the defects above. A 500-mile system inspected once a year at those rates pays $100,000 to $150,000, every year.

Owned aircraft fly after every storm, not on a contractor's calendar. Specifications for the Spector and Ranger are design targets until flight testing is complete.

The line-of-sight rule

Within visual line of sight, a two-person crew leapfrogs along the line, moving the pilot's position as the aircraft advances. Beyond it, you need FAA authorization, granted case by case; Part 108 is proposed, not final. Plan the patrol you can fly today and design for the authorization when you hold it.

What does a drone find on a line that a truck patrol misses?

Cracked insulators, damaged crossarms, corroded hardware, and vegetation encroachment seen from above and at the conductor, plus thermal hot spots on connections that look fine in daylight.

What does it cost per mile?

Reported contractor rates for drone line inspection run about $200 to $300 per mile in 2026. Helicopter patrol and climbing inspection cost more and often need an outage.

Do we need a thermal camera?

For substation and connection checks, yes; heat is the failure signature. For vegetation and hardware, a zoom camera does most of the work. The Spector, in development, is specified to carry both; the Corvin carries an optional gimbal camera and is the aircraft to train on.

Can we patrol the whole feeder beyond the pilot's sight?

Not without FAA authorization, granted case by case today. Within visual line of sight a crew leapfrogs along the line; with an authorization, a fixed-wing VTOL such as the Ranger, in development, is the long-patrol aircraft. We do not promise beyond-line-of-sight operation.

Does the drone have to be NDAA-compliant?

For a utility, increasingly yes: infrastructure operators and their regulators are moving to compliant aircraft, and imported thermal drones now carry a 100 percent tariff. EnCor aircraft are built in Tulsa without Section 889 covered components.
